Destruction

Destruction plays a pivotal part in the Sandman series, namely that he is responsible for the core plot: it is his actions that bring the kindly ones about his brother’s head.1_sq_4

Gaiman wrote the Sandman periodically, much like Dickens wrote a tale of two cities; they were for serialisation in print. He is quoted at being surprised how well he’d set things up for the ultimate finale, and the story’s construction is a thing of beauty. The idea of Dream seeking Destruction and the revelation that Destruction ‘visited’ long ago, are so poetically handled along with the other grand themes playing out in personal lives. It is almost unbelievable that it hangs together so well, even after all this time.

This was the first piece I made in this series, and the irony is not lost on me that Destruction equates himself to creation in the novels, and is depicted as being a terrible artist/poet/sculptor. As a new direction in my life takes hold it is only fitting that I began with an act of destruction, to make way for the new build.

This is Destruction:
